Lossy compression
Lossy compression is a type of data compression that removes some of the information from a file to reduce its size. This type of compression is generally not reversible, so once you've compressed an image using lossy encoding, you can't get all the missing data back without getting even more lost.
WebP uses two types of lossy compression: Progressive and Adaptive. Progressive WebP uses a combination of lossless and progressive encoding techniques to compress images. Progressive encoding means that only around 24% of the available information needs to be stored in order to show a near-lossless image at any given time. Adaptive WebP uses two steps: first, it determines what parts of an image are redundant and then it discards those areas; second, it encodes those now empty areas with progressively more detail as the user zooms in on the image.
When using WebP for storing or sharing images on the web, users should always use progressive WebP because this method provides better quality than adaptive WebP with similar file sizes for visible parts of an image. However, if you're creating animations with multiple frames, adaptive WebP might be preferable because there's no need to store identical frames repeatedly.
